About a month ago, I picked up a training lockpick set. I’ve always been curious about how lock picking works and how difficult it really is. In the process of learning, I discovered not only how easy it was, but how to look beyond the lock when it comes to protecting my home. Before you get too hopeful, no this won’t be a guide on how to pick locks. We still think it’s good to learn how security measures are broken so it doesn’t happen to you. However, understanding how locks work isn’t the same as keeping them safe.

What is Lock Picking: The Realm of Physical Bypassing
Lock picking falls within the scope of what is called physical bypassing. A bypass is nothing more than a technical term for going around or through something by means other than normally utilized. However, bypassing typically takes advantage of a flaw or weakness in design. For example, we normally use a key to get through a padlock. However, if that particular model of padlock utilizes a spring-loaded bolt to hold the shackle, we may be able to very simply and quickly bypass it by sliding a thin sheet of metal between the bolt and shackle — thus releasing the shackle and unlocking the lock.

You need Practice Locks. These were once very hard to come by, but you'll have no problem finding them now days due to the exploding popularity of lock picking as a sport (usually referred to as Locksport). There are hundreds of well organized hobbyists out there, in just about every civilized country. Locksmith students, law enforcement, security service providers and hobbyists alike all need better ways to learn to pick locks in a timely manner, and to develop those skills over time in an efficient way.

Lockpicking is really based on the feel of the lockpicking tools in your hand, and requires a weird mix of focus and relaxation, a sort of controlled zoning out. Botden, an engineer who has dabbled in locksmith work, likes to practice while watching TV.We got down to picking some locks. I started with one of the most basic ones, with just one pin inside (the standard lock on the front door of a house will have five pins, he told me, and industrial locks can have six or more). Working in the way Botden showed me, I inserted a tension wrench into the lock, and applied gentle pressure. Then I slid the lock pick through the hole, and pushed the pin upwards. It clicked open—an immensely satisfying feeling.
